Endoscopy is an excellent tool to investigate the upper and lower respiratory tract of the horse. We can easily visualise and record images of the nasal passages, the guttural pouches, the larynx, pharynx and its associated structures & the trachea down to the bronchi.
It is utilised during the investigation of:
- nasal discharge
- cough
- “bleeders” (EIPH)
- respiratory noise during exercise
- poor performance
Samples can be taken for:
- culture and/or PCR testing for bacteria, viruses & fungi
- Strangles
- tracheal wash and broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL)
